Sex And The City - A prequel -

We shared their love for shoes, purses, clothes and fashion… we shared their frustration with guys and empathized with them… and while they were out having some girl time in the city of New York drinking cosmopolitans and talking about their hopes and dreams, we were having slumber parties with our girlfriends sharing a single tiny bed, drinking warm cherry tea and having the exact same conversation that every SATC true fan would have: “OH! I’m Totally a Carrie! It’s like I’m dating Mr Big!”
Yes, Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha were our partners in crime and we saw so much of ourselves in all of them…
But while I thought that my personality was more of a strange mixture between Miranda’s amusing cynicism and Charlotte’s hopeless faith in perfect everlasting love, I absolutely loved Samantha’s spirit and I particularly admired Carrie’s ability to draw lessons from her everyday experiences… which held really great messages most of the time… My favorite one was by far the conclusion of the series where she reflected on relationships and deduced that “… the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself…” Very simple, very true but also sometimes hard to realize and easy to forget…
And just like that, the six seasons and the two films ended leaving us with plenty of legendary quotes and lots of material for girl talk at pajama parties… until CW decided to adapt the sequel book into a series called “The Carrie diaries”…
At the beginning, I was skeptical… Why spoil the great memories we had of the original show by dragging us into another high school drama full of scheming shallow brats? But to my surprise, it wasn’t like that at all…
Yes, it had all the cliché ingredients of a typical train wreck: the jealous sister, The queen bee (and her stupid minions), the nerdy friend, the experienced friend, the heartthrob and even the gay friend who’s still in the closet… but it didn’t feel heavy or fake…The episode was very well structured, the characters’ emotions were true, portrayed with sincerity, the problems they faced were substantial and real (not idiotic like Blair refusing to be with Chuck because she made some corny deal with Jesus to protect him as long as she stayed away from him – (what? Say that again? The girl wasn’t even religious!)) …proving again that simple, raw feelings draw people naturally to them simply because they’re relatable…
And while it had some elements of the original series (like Carrie’s voiceovers, her dramatic hair and her obsession with her closet), the allusions were very much subtle making “The Carrie Diaries” its own show…
All in all, very satisfying and definitely one to add to the long list of weekly downloads ;)
Until we meet again next week, dream big and dress fashionably…
